PA Nurse Residency Collaborative

Through a strategic partnership between the Pennsylvania Action Coalition and Vizient, Inc., hospitals and health systems in Pennsylvania are now eligible to participate in the Pennsylvania Nurse Residency Collaborative (PA-NRC).

PA-NRC participants will be able to access the Vizient | AACN Nurse Residency Program at a discounted rate, receive additional state-specific resources developed by the PA-NRC, and directly advance a key recommendation of the Institute of Medicine to implement nurse residency programs.

“Residency provides a continuing opportunity to apply important knowledge for the purpose of remaining a safe and competent provider in a continuous learning environment.”

Institute of Medicine, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011)

  • More than 200 hospital and health system participants

  • Statewide model for Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and Maryland

  • Ninety-five percent retention for first year (compared to 75% nationally)

  • Cost of orienting one new nurse exceeds $60,000

The Nurse Residency Program™ (NRP) supports data-driven solutions for new graduate nurses as they enter practice. The evidenced-based curriculum delivers on three key areas: leadership, patient outcomes, and professional development.

NRP helps organizations obtain and maintain Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

 Nurse Residency Council

One of the IOM recommendations that PA-AC addresses is the implementation of nurse residency programs.  These programs support a nurse's completion of a transition-to-practice program after completing a pre-licensure or advanced-practice degree program, or when transitioning into new clinical practice areas.

The Nurse Residency Council (NRC) works to provide support and guidance to health care agencies surrounding the design, implementation, and evaluation of nurse residency programs. These programs facilitate the transition of novice nurses into safe, efficient, competent, confident health care providers as they join Pennsylvania's nursing workforce.

Residencies promote three key goal areas consistent with the vision, mission, and core values of the NRC:

  • Service to the state's nursing community,

  • Establishment of clinical-academic partnerships, and

  • Exploration of funding partnerships.
