The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA) released the Sex, Race, and Ethnic Diversity of U.S. Health Occupations (2011-2015) report, which provides an analysis of 30 health occupations in the U.S.

These infographics were created by Stephen Perez, a PhD student and RWJF Future of Nursing Scholar in an analysis of data from the Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) from 2005 to 2015. His work was part of an effort to better understand the diversity trends across Pennsylvania’s nursing populations. Dr. Paula Milone-Nuzzo, the Dean of the Pennsylvania State University College of Nursing and the PA-AC Advisory Board Chair, guided Stephen’s work. The infographics were presented at the "Pennsylvania’s Healthcare Mosaic" conference.



Diversity is a key priority at both the state and national levels and is intended to help narrow the health care disparity gap, support the importance of a diverse workforce, and help prepare nurses to care for an increasingly diverse population. By increasing diversity throughout the health care and nursing workforce, we endeavor to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality, patient-centered care in a health care system where nurses contribute as essential partners in achieving success.

Nursing Diversity Council

  • The Nursing Diversity Council has engaged in a number of activities that align with PA-AC's diversity strategy, including:
    • Developing short videos of nurses from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds sharing their experiences of becoming nurses
    • Conducting a survey of culturally competent practices in health care facilities throughout Pennsylvania
    • Collecting data and a gap analysis on diversity within the state’s nursing workforce
